Ulster Women’s Rugby is looking to expand on recent successes with the introduction of the first ever women only seven’s tournament this summer.
The tournament will take place on Sunday 29th August at Belfast Harlequins Rugby Club with the fun kicking off at 11:00am and activities continuing late into the night with a “Toga Party” organised to finish the day off!
The tournament will feature ten sides from Ulster who will be vying to be the first winners of the Ulster Ladies 7’s
Women’s rugby livewires, Cooke Ladies, will start the tournament as favourites having dominated the Carrick 10‘s over the last few years but they may be vulnerable early in the season and will be missing Irish International’s Eliza Downey and Lauren Day who will be on International duty at the Women’s World Cup.
Hosts Belfast Harlequins will also be looking to collect some more silverware after winning the Ulster Shield last season and with exciting young players like Ashleigh Baxter they may be well suited for the open running game of 7’s. However the surprise of the tournament may be, the recently reformed, Enniskillen Ladies who thrilled many with their gritty and determined showing in the Carrick 10’s.
Australian born Natalie Bryant, the tournament organiser, hopes that the competition will become a regular event in the ladies calendar telling the FRU;
In Australia, the season usually starts with a 7’s tournament – it’s a great way to improve fitness early in the season and it’s a lot of fun.
Traditionally, 7s tournaments have a carnival like atmosphere and that is what we hope to achieve.
The FRU will, of course, be covering the event in full.
