According to a sharp sighted poster over on the UAFC it appears that Ulster have picked up yet another South African player, this time as a replacement for XXXavier Rush.
The original report on the Sport 24 website states:
“It is believed that Wannenburg will be released immediately and he will therefore not play for the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup.
The Blue Bulls did not want to confirm anything, but an announcement is expected soon.”
The 29 year old loose forward is regarded as a utility back with 113 caps in the Super 14 and has played for South Africa 20 times making his debut in 2002 against France.
His profile on the Springboks site says it all really –
“Pedrie Wannenburg is in his eighth Super Rugby season with the Bulls since he made his debut as a 21-year-old in 2002.
He is one of the most versatile forwards in the squad and is able to play at lock, flank and number 8.
He is a former SA Schools as well as SA under 21 player who went on from there to play for South Africa.
Wannenburg sparked a media storm when he admitted to abusing alcohol and drugs at the start of the 2010 season.
The Bulls had known about this for some time and do independent testing on the former Springbok.
Wannenburg bounced back from this difficult time to nail a starting place in the Bulls side in the absence of the injured Dewald Potgieter.”
All in all this looks like a good acquisition for Ulster, a big international standard back row with something to prove after his recent fall from grace.
He appears to be an excellent ball carrier and has a high scoring ratio for games played. Should be a great stand in for Ferris and I look forward to seeing him teamed up with Diack.
With four South African’s now expected to run out for Ulster it appears that Dr Dave’s one man tour with the Lions last year has borne extraordinary fruit!

Dr Dave and Dewi discuss signings in Durban!
