ulster120white Ulster have selected the same 27 players as last week for this week’s training squad for the vital Heineken Cup match against Bath on Saturday. KO 15:45

It should be a brutal week’s training as Ulster prepare for an historical win in England to ensure participation in the European knock out stages for the first time since their glorious European Cup win in 1999. Unless there are a series of upsets elsewhere it looks as though Ulster will be competing in the latter stages of the Challenge Cup rather than the Heineken Cup but even that should be seen as a significant achievement for the club given the turbulence of previous seasons.

For the supporter, it’s certainly been a while since we went into the final Pool fixtures with something still to play for so even that is a result irrespective of Saturdays final outcome.

ULSTER: Bryan Young, Tom Court, Andy Kyriacou, Nigel Brady, BJ Botha, Declan Fitzpatrick, Ed O’Donoghue, Ryan Caldwell, Neil McComb, Stephen Ferris, Chris Henry, Dan Touhy, Willie Faloon, Thomas Anderson, David Pollock. BACKS: Clinton Schifcofske, Timoci Nagusa, Simon Danielli, Andrew Trimble, Ian Whitten, Darren Cave, Paddy Wallace, Ian Humphreys, Isaac Boss, Jamie Smith, Niall O’Connor, Cillian Willis

There are a stack of permutations for qualification for this match but most should mean very little to the supporter. All that matters is a good performance and with a good performance Ulster should have too much for a Bath side lacking in imagination and confidence, and the only worries should be the weather and the abysmal state of their pitch! However Ulster’s pack are playing some of the best rugby around, in all competitions, so even a forward based slog against the English side should have little worries and if by a fluke there is any chance of open play Ulster should comfortably outscore their opponents.

Providing there are no injuries throughout the week I fully expect the match day squad to have only two change from last week and those will be Faloon replacing Anderson and  Schifcofske replacing Nagusa on the bench giving the FRU Select as follows:

(15-9) Jamie Smith, Andrew Trimble, Darren Cave, Paddy Wallace, Simon Danielli, Ian Humphreys, Isaac Boss. (1-8) Tom Court, Nigel Brady, BJ Botha, Dan Tuohy, Ed O’Donoghue, Stephen Ferris, David Pollock, Chris Henry (Capt). (16-23) Andy Kyriacou, Bryan Young, Declan Fitzpatrick, Ryan Caldwell, Willie Faloon, Cillian Willis, Niall O’Connor, Clinton Schifcofske

it is still deathly quiet on the Bath Forums regarding Saturdays game but at least one of the Bath coaches has given a little insight into how Bath will approach the game.

This is an article quoting Martin Haag, Bath Forwards coach:
