I was never a big fan of John Peel while he was alive. He always seemed to know more about music than I did and he had the annoying habit of seeing something that much deeper in bands than I did and I always felt that I was somehow missing out. We did however share a deep affection for the Undertones.
My son recently presented me with a collection of Mr Peel’s writings from the last thirty years and having found time to dip into it I must say I am really enjoying his style of prose, a relaxed easy style I’d love to be able to recreate.
As I read and hear the varied reactions to the Ulster team announced for the match against Stade, I find myself reacting in a similar way that I used to react to Mr Peel. What am I missing?
A poor performance against Glasgow on the back of an away defeat to Munster and the doom mongers are out in force and with the injury situation you would think there is no point in Ulster turning up tomorrow afternoon. We’re looking light on the bench and we’ve no strength in depth!
I, on the other hand, am getting more and more excited about the selection. This backs against the wall stuff is great and I’ve no doubt that the Ulster men chosen will stand up tomorrow and will come away with a win and a win with a degree of comfort. Why, because good sides aren’t made out of individual players but from the ethos and pride and passion behind the shirt and it’s here where I think our boys have the edge. It’s what we’ve been claiming and tomorrow is just the occasion to prove it.
I can’t wait!
Ulster: (15-9) Schifcofske, Trimble, Cave, Whitten, Danielli, Ian Humphreys, Boss. (1-8) Court, Brady, Fitzpatrick D, O’Donoghue, Tuohy, Ferris, Pollock, Henry (Capt.) (16-23) Kyriacou, Young, Fitzpatrick J, Caldwell, Faloon, Marshall, O’Connor, Smith.
Ulster look to be starting with the heaviest pack available and I fully expect the front row to run themselves into the ground for 50 – 60 minutes given the able replacements. In fact I expect all the forward replacements to get a substantial run out and I expect the forwards to win this game.
I would love to see Justy get on the pitch as he’s champing at the bit, I’m sure, and as I write this I can see him barrelling over under the posts for the bonus point try on the 69th minute, glorious game indeed!
In the backs Smith and Marshall may get some game time if Ulster are chasing, but we know that’s not going to happen so they will stick with the starting back line for as long as possible.

It’s good to see McLaughlin reads this site. He has addressed every issue I had after the Glasgow match and made the necessary changes. He obviously took to heart my comments on Caldwell, benched. Pollock or Fallon not both and placing the more versatile Smith on the bench. Well done Brian.
