I see old Parky is still quoting song lyrics in his occasional scribblings and as I write this piece there is an old Carpenter’s classic that keeps bubbling up at the back of my mind.
“Rainy days and Mondays always get me down” may strike a note with the supporters of other teams but it doesn’t look like it’s going to be a sentiment that’ll apply to Ulster supporters for the foreseeable future. In fact us Ulster supporters should be looking forward to a good few more rainy days and Happy Mondays if the team is to continue to perform as they did in heir last two saturated outings, though I think I’ll leave it up to Parky to fit “Twisting my melon man” into his next piece!
Most Ulster supporters will be whistling “I’ve had the time of my life” as they make their way to work this morning after sampling that special atmosphere on the rain soaked Prom when Ulster stuck it to the Heineken Cup holders in the top of the table Magners League clash. It’s a pity that this feeling of victory in adversity is denied the corporate heads in their heated boxes and the fair weather supporters on the terrace who have lost a certain edge now they are fully cosseted under a gleaming new roof! I see they’re already starting to get soft as Parky is now complaining about health and safety access to the new terrace. They’ll be wanting heated barriers next.
No such health and safety worries for the visiting Leinster fans who parked their burros at their, now habitual, spot on the half way mark of the Prom to bring their own blend of banter and support to enhance the big match atmosphere. It’s a pity more teams fans don’t make the same effort.
Disappointingly, the Mexicans didn’t arrive on time for the Rosie and they certainly missed some very tasty chicken and ham pies. There was an appearance from a couple of adventurous scouts and it was good to meet the infamous Dave Cahill though he did manage to slip out before I organised a photo opportunity.
I did manage to get a couple of snaps in the Scoop before the game where we caught up with Steve “Waterbottle” Kyriacou who was there
with Andy’s big sister Karen. Steve’s certainly getting excited about a possible call up to one of the Ireland squads this autumn so here’s hoping.
While the new stand my have it’s luxuries there is still a certain amount of class over on the Prom side as this picture of a young man can testify.
An afternoon match, a quick change into your tie and tails, the Ulster Leinster game and a formal dinner after.
Now that’s what I call a good Saturday!

“I see old Parky…” Hey you less of the old, if you don’t mind, old chap. My lyrics may be ‘yesterday once more’ but that doesn’t mean I’m as old as the words !!!!!!!!!!
Having suffered the wind and rain for yonks on the Terrace, I’m slowly adapting to the new found dryness of the whole thing.
