The ship used in the filming of the classic 1962 version of “Mutiny on the Bounty” sits in Galway harbour left over from their Tall Ships event and while I didn’t see any mutinies (well maybe a few over the Lisbon Agreement vote) there was certainly plenty of bounty on offer on two fun filled nights in Galway.
On previous trips we’d just done the drive down, go to The Huntsman, go to the game, drinks in the club after, back to hotel then up early for drive back the next morning. Not really seeing too much of what Galway has to offer. This time, at the invite of a couple of old workmates, I was able to pop down on Thursday afternoon, have a bit of a night out on Thursday, a good nights sleep and up, fully rested, for a few afternoon scoops in Galway centre before meeting with the travelling hoards in The Huntsman.
Very impressed with Galway itself. It really is a weekend party town with the streets absolutely jam packed on Thursday and Friday night. Arthur Guinness’s’ 250th birthday may have had something to do with it on Thursday, as there were plenty of groups toasting his good health, but it was all good humoured and not a hint of trouble. Well worth a trip and at 4.50 euro a pint it hasn’t quite reached Dublin prices just yet.
But, I digress. The bulk of the small crowd of travelling supporters congregated round behind the dugouts. Last time we visited there was plenty of room but this was a match were the Connacht supporters obviously fancied their chances and the ground was pretty packed. Luckily the travelling support was of the extremely vocal kind and we managed to make ourselves heard and keep the Ulster replacements on their toes!
As usual the local support was very friendly and they had plenty of questions about the new faces in the Ulster squad. They were however very disappointed with the second half performance from their side and in truth Ulster looked to have the game in the bag from the 42nd minute on.
After the match it was the usual fun a games in the club bar, free access to all and no cards required, where we had the opportunity to meet some of the Turkish contingent of Ulster’s worldwide supporters club.
Later that night we headed into Galway city centre, but by that stage things were getting a little hazy!
