Ulster have named a squad of 26 ahead of Friday nights game against the Scarlets. KO 7:05pm.
The extended squad sees the return of Young, Caldwell and Houra in the pack with Tuohy dropping out due to injury. In the backs it’s a welcome opportunity for the abrasive Mark McCrea after good pre-season performances and young scrum half Ian Porter and out half Niall O’Connor also join the panel.
Ulster Squad: (Forwards) N Brady, BJ Botha, B Young, E O’Donoghue, A Kyriacou, C Henry, S Ferris, W Faloon, T Anderson, N McComb , T Court, D Fitzpatrick, R Caldwell, T Houra. (Backs) T Nagusa, D Cave, A Trimble, I Whitten, P Marshall, I Boss, I Humphreys, P Wallace, C Schifcofske, I Porter, N O’Connor, M McCrea.
There’s certainly going to be a few tough calls in the pack. Young or Court, McComb or Caldwell and Henry or Anderson or Houra. For my pennies worth I would go with the option of giving Court another run out in the front row, but he needs to have a big game to oust Young for the Bath game, I’d also start with McComb in second row with Caldwell to come on after 50 minutes and I think Houra and Anderson will both drop out with Henry on the bench for back row cover. The back row tussle is going to be immense this season.
Despite Diack not being named in the above squad we expect him to keep his place!
In the backs I see a surprise call up for O’Connor with Humphreys to be rested on the bench alongside Marshall and McCrea with Whitten dropping out along with Porter.
My team for Scarlets would read -
(1–8) Court, Kyriacou, Botha, McComb, O’Donoghue, Ferris, Faloon, Diack. (9 – 15) Boss, O’Connor, Trimble, Wallace, Cave, Nagusa, Schifcofske. (16 – 22) Brady, D Fitzpatrick, Caldwell, Henry, Marshall, Humphreys, Trimble.
The playing 22 will be named on Thursday at noon.

Oh dear Dewi you must have failed to take your medication the one thing Humphreys needs is game time and for the coaching staff to show him he is number one by picking him.
Caldwell will struggle to start and even money he will be yellow carded if he gets 40 minutes.
Mark McCrea deserves a start, who knows where he would be now if he had been shown the same loyalty Williams showed to Nagusa.
Having watched the pre season games and the Ravens game against Munster the one player who has looked the most comfortable is Jamie Smith …. Ravens tip for a breakthrough this season.

I still think they’ll give O’Connor a fair amount of game time before the Heiny, don’t want to go into the campaign with only one out half up to speed.
