ulster120 While we we’re partying away in Bangor on Thursday, Ulster Rugby released news on two players which will have an impact on the coming season.

Very much on the down side was the news about Rory. David Humphreys says it all in this piece on ulsterrugby.com: -

“Obviously losing Rory at the start of the season is a huge blow for us, not only is he our No. 1 hooker but also our captain and one of the most experienced players in the squad. However, what is most important is Rory’s long term health and welfare and there’s no reason not to expect him to return fully to rugby, post surgery and rehabilitation, next season.”

“The timing of this injury presents difficulties as most players are contracted for the 09-10 season. While we strengthened our hooking options this summer with the signing of Andy Kyriacou, we are working at present to find a replacement for Rory within world rugby.”

Nothing much to add except that we wish Rory all the best and a trouble free and speedy recovery. He always has time for the fans on away trips and we hope that his enforced rest enables him to come back fitter and stronger in time to nail down his place for Ireland for the next World Cup.

The second piece of news concerned Ulster’s last signing for next season (though they will now, of course, be looking for a replacement hooker). Despite rumour and speculation on this site and others Ulster Rugby finally lifted the cloak of secrecy to confirm that Tamaiti Horua will, in fact, be in Belfast next week to complete his move from Western Force.

A big powerful back row forward he will add some much needed experience and beef to the back row and this is very much a move that I am pleased has finally come to fruition. Described by John Mitchell as, “a powerful forward, with clever skills who will bring extra grunt in the back row, particularly with the ball in hand” Horua should take on some of the burden of expectation from the massive shoulders of Stephen Ferris.

At 28 he has plenty of seasons left in him and if he can stay injury free he should make a meaningful impact. Not least, by the looks of the photo above, he should be able to help Andrew Trimble with his boxing skills!
