French match report now added.
Obviously didn’t get to see the game, but according to this report over on Ulster Rugby the Red Hand Gang appear to have put in a creditable performance in this narrow defeat over in the South of France.
In a tough economic climate, Ulster are taking the prudent step of fully exploiting their assets with youngsters Seymour, Shiels, McComb, and Smith all getting a run out alongside new signings Kyriacou and Tuohy.
No mention of previously announced signing Horua, and with only two weeks to go until the next round of pre-season friendlies it looks as though he won’t be appearing after all.
Report from the Bayonne site below.
“It’s not so much the score but the way that they played and in this game there were some good moves. The Irish were very aggressive in the ruck area and the Bayonnais responded with the moving game we had seen previously against the Brumbies. There was some wonderful combinations of forward and backs reminiscent of the glory days. The Sky Blues and Whites produced a beautiful display however it would have been better with more tries. One feels however that, with a week to go before the championship, the squad is already competitive.
Both coaches appeared happy with the game and were pleased with the large crowd. Despite two or three failures to score when close to the Irish line the coaching staff were pleased with the performance and are now certain that the Bayonnais XV will compete with the biggest this season.
Bayonne now face a difficult trip to Perpignan in the Top 14 and expect a hostile welcome for Stade Francais at the Stade Anoeta on Friday 21st August.”
