richardhills Without any word from Ulster Rugby the speculation on the new coach continues. This time the spotlight falls on Richard Hill, but which one?

Unfortunately it’s not England and Lions legend Richard Hill but ex Bristol coach Richard Hill, who is reported to already have had an interview in the past week.

Now, all joking aside Bristol Hill would not be a bad selection. He’s already familiar with working with a limited budget and resources and he  was reasonably successful with Bristol, taking them to third in the Premiership in 2006 – 2007. His star has fallen somewhat over the last couple of seasons with a ninth place finish last year and, of course, relegation this year but much of this can be put down to the financial problems of the Avon based side.

I’m in two minds about this one. He did get Bristol to punch above their weight for a couple of seasons but the nature of his departure from Bristol in February makes me feel a little uneasy about his drive and commitment when the going gets tough. I’ve been searching the internet about his departure and it does however appear that he was pushed, or more correctly eased out, rather than actually jumping.

He did deliver a good, hard, forwards based game and made Bristol one of the best packs in the forwards dominated Guinness Premiership. This is, in my book, where Ulster failed to capitalise last year so on that basis he could be just the man that Ulster need. If he is selected expect plenty of biff, bash bosh up front and lots of lovely rolling mauls. That gets a big thumbs up from The FRU!
