It has been reported on the BBC website that Matt Williams has today resigned as coach of Ulster.
It is no surprise that the article goes on to site family reasons as Ulster have struggled to re-coup mid season form during Matt Williams extended trip to Australia during the Six Nations.
However this is probably the right decision for Williams and for Ulster Rugby. Despite his continuous claims of “blooding youth” Williams first season in charge could be regarded as a disappointment with a 33% win ratio and an 8th place finish.
Williams also appeared to alienate fans with his selection policy over the last few months and with his much reported statement to “show me your coaching badges” when he was criticised over his substitution policy when Ulster threw away a substantial leads against the lowly Dragons.
Claims of top five finishes and highlighting “unlucky” losses while completely ignoring “lucky” wins further weakened his credibility. At the time such comments could have been regarded as a coach trying to bolster the confidence of his team now they could be regarded as a coach trying to improve his CV.
Are there going to be further resignations at Ulster rugby as this story unfolds? Expect some turbulence in the weeks ahead!
