This was a great occasion spoilt by one man, namely Welsh referee and Dergman lookalike Tim Hayes. On our travels over the last few years, particularly round Heineken Cup time, there are often discussions on the relative merits of the Magners League and the Guinness Premiership, however one thing that can not be argued is the piss poor standard of referees in the Magners.

The 1,500 Ulster supporters created a tremendous atmosphere and with Ulster scoring an early try all things look set for an exciting match. Then up steps Mr Hayes who spent the next thirty minutes blowing Ulster off the park and out of the Heineken Cup. This is not sour grapes, as the exciting Harlequins back line had the edge,  but a comment on a referee who showed no feel for the game of rugby and absolutely no sense of occasion.

The match aside this was a great trip and full credit to The Hounds who kept up their relentless support of Ulster for the full game. We may have lost the match but we certainly won the battle of the stands.
