Andrew points out his granddad.

What Ulster Rugby means to the people of this wee Provence was brought home on Friday night when I spotted young Andrew Toland studying the past pictures in the Scoop Bar.

Andrew wasn’t looking at the old black and white photos because he was bored with all the old forty somethings pretending to be twenty something but he was trying to spot his granddad, George Cromey, in the pictures.

A contemporary of Blair Maine, George Cromey played for Ulster and Ireland from 1936 – 1939, scoring two tries for Ireland in the 1937 – 1938 Four Nations. (I’m sure someone like Cables will add his Ulster record.)

Young Andrew was delighted to spot him in the picture and isn’t this what a team like Ulster is all about. With a rich heritage stretching back over the decades Ulster will always have something that other clubs can’t match. We all know family or friends that have had the honour of pulling on the Red Hand over the years and that’s one of the things that makes us come back week after week rain hail of shine.

With so many new faces in the team this year maybe they should take time to sit down with Andrew and let him tell them what being an Ulster Man really means.
