The BiedOne month on from the FRU Awards and after travelling three thousand eight hundred and sixty seven miles, The FRU finally catch up with UWM Lady Panther Team Player of the Year Brittany Biedenbender. But it wasn’t all plain sailing!

As you may be aware, rugby players don’t travel light so our first hurdle was getting the Belfast Crystal vase on board the plane for Chicago as extra hand luggage. After a quick chat with the very friendly Aer Lingus check in staff we were given the all clear to take it on board along with our camera and laptop.

The crystal was carefully stowed for the duration of the flight and despite some minor turbulence it got to Chicago O’Hare in one piece. We collected the rest of our bags and next step was round to Avis to collect our rental car.

On the way to Avis our meeter and greeter, Coach Scot, offered to carry the crystal and I gladly handed it over as I struggled to contain my other two bags.

As we zoomed up the freeway to Milwaukee I checked with Scot as to the location of the award and after an unsuccessful search of the car interior a quick phone call confirmed that it was sitting on the desk in the Avis office, now about thirty miles away. Concerned about the wrath of Ms B should we turn up empty handed, Scot volunteered to return to Chicago that night to collect it.

Next morning the award was returned, by a relieved Scot, to my care and arrangements were made to present Brittany with the trophy at the morning session of our Friday camp in Milwaukee. Unfortunately things didn’t go according to plan. We had hoped to give the vase to Brittany at the end of the session with a bit of a crowd and a few words of congratulation. However, the Bied had had her car towed that morning so it was a quick rush at the end as she had to go and collect it from the pound so our elaborate ceremony was reduced to; -

“Here, take this!”

“Wow that’s neat!”

“Stand there!” snap, snap snap. “OK off you go!”

We did however get this in our inbox next morning.

I just wanted to say thanks again for the beautiful award!! Sorry I had to leave in such a hurry…I got my car though….$125 later! I hope you enjoy the rest of your stay in the States! I’ll look over the itinerary that you have and maybe I can stop by one of the camps to say hi! Thanks again! I’m very honored!

Talk to you later!
Brittany
