If Only!

The dogs have been barking in Portugal and although we appear to have a strong and experienced pack the general consensus is that we still lack a world class back to settle our young and exciting back line when the going gets tough.

The name to pop up, yet again, is none other than Australia captain Stirling Mortlock.

Now while Mortlock may be the thing of dreams one thing is certain. He is exactly the sort of player that Ulster need if they are going to win the tight games in the forthcoming season.

With a starting back line of Boss, Humphreys, Trimble, Wallace, Dewey, Danielli and Schifcoske, or something similar (you could also throw in Nagusa, Cunningham, and O’Connor),  there does not appear to be an “old head” available who has the ability and charisma to step up and take control. Shifty may have the years but it’s hard to control things from full back and, along with the rest, he will be desperately trying to nail down his own starting position.

If we don’t make a signing like this in the next few weeks will Boss, Humphreys, Wallace or Trimble be ready to step up?
