The inclusion of Paddy Wallace into the starting XV after the withdrawal of the unfortunate Luke Fitzgerald is a welcome change from the O’Sullivan era. Previously O’Sullivan would have moved Horgan into the centre and brought Murphy on, showing no faith whatsoever in his squad and limiting the number of players with real international experience.
Now, despite 8 previous caps, Paddy finally gets his first proper outing in an Ireland shirt against the mighty All Blacks in their own back yard. While it is a big ask I hope he grasps the opportunity with both hands and puts in a match winning display.
With his natural instinct for spotting a gap Paddy has improved his defence immeasurably over the last 18 months and he now has one of the highest tackle counts in the Ulster squad. His defence will no doubt be tested by the All Blacks early on but if he comes through this game with his confidence intact a rejuvenated Paddy would be a great boost for Ulster and Ireland.
Stephen Ferris has been called into the squad as cover for Quinlan. This means that 1F will not now be appearing in the Churchill Cup. No word yet on whether he will be replaced.
